The Mental Shift That Changed Everything

So, as I write this, it has been almost two whole years since I wrote my last blog post.

And to kick things off again, I wanted to share a video of an emotional story from my past…

To tell the honest truth, I kind of run my blog the same way I run my businesses.

If there isn’t something really worth shouting about, I simply don’t do it. Whether it be a product, a blog post or promoting products. If I dont get excited, I dont get involved. (Regardless of the potential money up for grabs)

It’s also been two years since my last product launch too..

This is almost exactly the opposite of what you will see other marketers do. In fact, in a recent interview, the interviewer said to me:

“Most marketers would worry they are no longer relevant if they hadn’t launched a product in two years, but you managed to not only stay relevant, but ensure people stayed interested!”

And you know what?

Business is great, sales are at an all time high and we have a waiting list of people begging for our next product.

So, how did we manage to do this, without the usual barrage of constant self promotion and hype?

In this video, I explain an emotional turning point for me in my past, which also cemented my business philosophy.

The philosophy that has meant, we can continue to be a highly successful, seven figure business, without launches, hype or constant promotion, year after year.

    I admire what you did, and I would like to think I’d have done the same. You support the ‘underdog’, not the Top Brass bosses, and to hell with our own ‘job safety’

    Nearest I came to this was working at Woolworths. The “management” INSISTED that every customer got offered postage stamps, phone top ups and a video tape. (not one, all of them!) Even if the customer had been in yesterday, and got the same speil. I refused to goad the customer into increasing company’s profit line. (My ideology is if the customer wants them, they’ll ask for them!) It got to the point where other staff would “fill shelves” behind me, and tip off management if i didn’t offer the items. When I was hauled in front of bosses and asked to “explain myself”, I told them what they could do with the job; I refused to MAKE customers spend more than they intended.

    So you might say it served them right that “Woolies” went bankrupt!

    Been there. Your story brought back a memory for me.

    I once managed an office for a guy who was shortchanging a key client, something that the client discovered and got verification of from members of our staff.

    The client then called me and asked some direct questions. I gave the wrong answers because I had taken the word of my employer as gold.

    The client thought I was lying to him.

    I got the facts from the staff members then called my boss and explained the situation, asking for input on how to proceed.

    His response was that I was to repudiate the other staff members, and perpetuate the lie.

    I couldn’t believe it. The client had it all in detail, how we were mishandling his agreement. I said that we should just explain our reasons, apologize, and make what amends were necessary. The boss insisted that I do as he ordered.

    I refused.

    It cost me the job and resulted in a bit of financial difficulty, but I was always glad to be out of there.

    Later, I learned that my former boss had gone to the client and to save the contract he blamed the whole episode on me…that I had made the decisions.

    To his credit the client didn’t believe it, and told me so a couple of months afterwards.

    Integrity isn’t just about how others see you, but more importantly how you see yourself.

      Interesting to hear your story Jerry.. and interesting to hear that the client instinctively knew who to trust.

      I think we all usually know in the end who is right and who is wrong. Obviously your desire to do the right thing showed to the client.

      Lessons and stories like these are great to hear as a reminder that there are good people out there who will treat others how they themselves would want to be treated.

    It is very interesting what happened to you. Today, treating your customers badly seems to be more common now than ever before. I sometimes wonder how a business ever gets itself into that situation. Greed perhaps? Fear? Stupidity?

    Have they forgotten that important rule – It takes a lot of hard work to get a customer – and hardly any to lose them!

    In this day and age with all the competition that is around, gaining loyalty from your customer is ‘king’! Treat them right and they will keep coming back. Treat them badly and they will not only go, but tell all their friends as well.

    Well done Josh … I wonder how many other have done a similiar thing?

    Excellent Josh, wise words. Not only moraly right but very good business sense. We are in business for the long term and not just to make a fast buck (pound) and that will only happen if we put the customer first!

    I once heard Richard Brandson say: If you cannot provide a better service for your customer, you better work for a company that does. Otherwise it makes no sense to go into business yourself. And while soliciting for a job, keep that question in mind: Are they doing: customer then figures or vice versa?. Yeah, it is a great lesson.

    Awesome story Josh. Been there myself… TWICE! Walked away both times. Eventually started my own business offline and was told, “You have NO business sense… you’ll NEVER make it!”

    After 25 years of running my own VERY SUCCESSFUL practice, I ‘retired’ from that ‘real-world’ business to pursue my online dream. And I KNOW deep down in my heart that I will be able to not only duplicate my offline success; I will far surpass it because I’m no longer limited by location as to the audience I’ll be able to reach.

    After all, I’m still me… the guy who believed from the very bottom of his heart that the CUSTOMER should ALWAYS be the PRIMARY REASON for doing anything.

    Josh, what’s inspiring about your story is that faced with a decision on doing the ‘right thing’ versus making money, you stuck to your core values of who you were way before your paths crossed with that family. They were lucky to have run into you that day. Courage comes in many different forms. On that day, you showed courage, which led to doing good for another, which made you, I’m sure, feel good about yourself! (your wife might not have felt the same since courage doesn’t pay the bills, but you can never have enough good Karma and on that day, you banked some good Karma :)

    I’d like to add one last thing: Always putting the customer first, as you so eloquently point out, leads to loyalty, which leads to reciprocity! Isn’t that the true winning formula for success in anything anyway?

      I always remind myself (and others) that you should be in business for some other reason than money.

      No person who has seen real lasting success has simply “been in it for the money”, there HAS to be more than that.

      We are in business to make a difference, make the best products we can and to help people as much as we can in their journey. (With our tools and training)

      Money is the side affect of that.

    Nice to hear the honesty Josh and so true about believing in your product or service. If your heart’s in it as well as your head and it feels right its fine. I teach the essense of what you were talking about here because when we work on the inside everything on the outside falls into place and that means we’ve got to be congruent and aligned with our deepest values then we’re in flow state and well on the way to success in what we love to do.
    Coincidentally I used to work in Bristol too, many years ago and recruited for many of the household names in the City and I like and have purchased EVP !

    Thanks Josh , fantastic video and statement, You know after completing 25 years in the Army, i too disagreed with a lot of the crap and decisions being made, i too quite after a statement made towards me from some idiot wearing a bigger badge, which apparently gives you the right to talk to people like shit. From that day, i decided to be in charge of my own army, and refuse to work for anyone else ever again. The simple message looking after people, is so simple people don’t get it, they can’t see anything but money hence their short lived lifes in business. All the best buddy and keep up the great work.     Great story, well told. And important to share. I quit my first job when my boss reversed a very painful decision I had had to make for the good of quality in general. Since then, I have quit 2 other jobs — when they became too corporate or just not fun. It’s always a right decision to leave when your gut or your heart tell you to leave. In fact, if more people would do what you did, we would have a far better society in general.

    Hi Josh, what a great story and act of kindness and courage! I think I would feel exactly the same as you. It almost made me cry! I don’t like seeing people ripped off (especially by financial institutions), life is too short. The more kindness in the world makes a better planet. Its good to be able to hold your head high with having good ju ju and integrity.
